Modernizing a Fitness Icon:
The Muscle Insider Transformation

Project Overview:

The Client

When we first went through their Drupal website it was clear they were sitting on a massive archive of high-quality content that deserved a stronger, more modern platform. Their website, other than articles, had remained largely unchanged for nearly a decade—which, in web terms, is an eternity. Together, we identified the opportunity to move away from a legacy Drupal system and rebuild the site on a high-performance WordPress platform designed to support their content, improve usability, and set them up for long-term growth.

The Challenge

For ten years, the site had stayed the same while the way people browse the web changed completely.

The “Shrinking” Problem: The site wasn’t truly mobile responsive. On a phone, it just looked like a tiny version of the desktop site.

Outdated Tech: The Drupal backend was becoming a hurdle for the team to manage.

The “Boxed” Aesthetic: The old design felt cramped and didn’t reflect the high-energy, modern brand that Muscle Insider represents.

The Approach:

Our approach was to deliver a complete refresh—one that respected Muscle Insider’s established brand while creating a more engaging, modern experience for both readers and the internal team.

Migration & Ease of Use
We seamlessly migrated thousands of existing articles and assets from Drupal to WordPress, dramatically improving day-to-day usability. The new setup gives the editorial team far greater control and makes managing content faster and more intuitive.

Mobile-First Thinking
We designed the site with a mobile-first mindset, ensuring a smooth, consistent experience across all devices. Whether readers are browsing on a desktop or scrolling on their phone between workouts, the site is now easy to navigate and enjoyable to use—no pinching or zooming required.

A Vibrant New Look
Visually, we modernized the site with a cleaner, more contemporary aesthetic. As part of the refresh, we updated the brand’s signature red to feel more vibrant and impactful while staying true to Muscle Insider’s identity.

Athlete Showcases
To better highlight their talent roster, we introduced a featured athlete section on the homepage and reorganized the athlete database alphabetically. This makes discovery easier and creates a more polished, user-friendly experience for fans and readers alike.

The Results:

The transformation of Muscle Insider was about more than just a fresh coat of paint; it was about reclaiming their authority as a leader in the fitness space. By migrating a decade’s worth of archives from Drupal to WordPress, we replaced a rigid, frustrating user experience with a fluid, high-speed platform that breathes. The biggest win was the shift in accessibility. Instead of losing mobile visitors to a “shrunken” desktop view that was impossible to read, readers can now engage with science-based training and high-res contest galleries seamlessly on any device. We’ve empowered their editorial team with a management system that actually works, ensuring that Muscle Insider stays as fast-paced and agile as the industry it covers.
